Kate McLean
I am a Cultural Anthropologist & Design Researcher, focusing on ethnographic research and its potential in the field of Human-Center Design. After enrolling in Carnegie Mellon's School of Design from 2013-2017 to pursue multiple degrees in the field, I graduated with an enhanced toolset that has aided in my journey to bring anthropological methods to the actionable world of design. Since graduation, I have been working with design consultancies and software development companies as a UX Designer, Researcher and Strategist.
Additionally, based on research from my Master’s thesis, I pursued and acquired a software patent for an invention stemming from that work, which was focused on increasing adoption of sustainable methods of transportion. Partnering with local business, I was able to produce and sell products that will increase safety for commuters. This remains a passion project for me that I intend to expand upon over time.
While anthropology has always been my passion, the field is mainly concerned with preserving the past and conserving the present. To me, Design takes the skills of the anthropologist and applies them to the future. My objective as a designer is to use my diverse skillset to create a more sustainable future – locally and at the global level.
